What's the premise?
A seemingly-paranoid woman is hiding from the ultimate tech mega-corporation, in a remote cabin in a mountain-top forest near Cape Town, South Africa. She must decide if a charming stranger is her ally, or a spy sent to destroy her.
Who might enjoy this film?
Those who love intelligent psychological Sci-Fi thrillers; movies that explore the implications of technology, A.I. and societal control, but with a focus on character-driven narratives, rather than just spectacle. Examples of similar type films are the Black Mirror series, Ex Machina, Looper, Her.
Who's involved in this project?
Written & Directed by Mark Jackson (Girl From Nowhere). Starring Mark Penwill (Catch Me a Killer) & Camilla Wolfson (The Kissing Booth 2, Action Point)
How far along is the production?
We have a first cut running at 80 minutes. Now we're busy with VFX and an original soundtrack. After that, focus will shift to grading and audio mastering. We're aiming for a completed film by the 4th quarter of 2025.
Read what was said about filmmaker Jackson's previous movie:
'GIRL FROM NOWHERE success has Showmax execs smiling, and scratching their heads'
"Showmax execs have been thrilled, and left scratching their heads, after their recent acquisition, Girl from Nowhere, has become their number 1 most popular movie. With no prior cinema release, no marketing budget, and made on a minuscule production budget, it still managed to fend off even big budget Hollywood movies, to be the most watched film on the platform.
In the 10 weeks since it debuted on the 1st July, it achieved # 1 position across local and international movies. #11 position across local and international movies for the last 12 months, from a unique viewership perspective. It's been in the top 10 position since launch, and trended in #1 spot for nearly 2 weeks.
Director Mark Jackson says: "I'm really grateful to Showmax for taking this chance on my no-budget indie movie. I think perhaps it's done so well in part due to its gritty look and feel, and to the strong, natural performances of the cast. And perhaps audiences are wanting something different, something more authentic to them than some of the big budget Hollywood films. I really hope it inspires other guerrilla filmmakers to look beyond their budget constraints."
